This almost 10-year-old taproom is tapping out.
Since 2015, Coney Island Brewery in Brooklyn has been slinging its namesake brews out of a single-story shop steps from the neighborhood’s famed amusement park — but soon, no more.
“We have some news to share with our beloved community,” the craft brewer wrote in an Instagram post late last month. “After a decade of unforgettable moments, we’ve made the tough business decision to close our taproom in Coney Island.”
The 1904 Surf Ave. space will shutter on Thursday, Nov. 9, with a taproom closing party scheduled for this Saturday, Nov. 4.
“To our cherished community partners, and to every incredible guest who has visited our taproom over the past 10 unforgettable years, there are not enough words to encapsulate our gratitude,” the post continues. “Whether you danced like a Mermaid in the streets, rocked out to live performances, or shared a tale or two over a pint, you’ve made our journey truly special – THANK YOU for the countless memories.”
The brewery cited financial woes and the “seasonality of the area” — which teems with beachgoers in the summer but, come winter, transforms into a frigid no-man’s land frequented only by residents and a few stoic fishermen — as the reasons for the closure, Brooklyn Magazine reported.
While the company’s only brick and mortar location will soon be gone, the beer will continue to be locally available at a variety of retailers.
Indeed, this isn’t the first time Coney Island Brewery — known for creations including its Parachute Jump Pale Ale and Mermaid Pilsner — will be without a storefront. Its first location, a bitty venue then known as the “smallest brewery in the world” inside Coney Island USA’s Freakatorium, was destroyed in 2012 by Hurricane Sandy.
The brand itself was born in 2007 and purchased by Boston Beer Company in 2013, according to Brooklyn Magazine.
